Highlander Test Model

Finally finished the first test model. It was actually pretty fast to paint, and that is one of the requirements for modeling the infantry for this army - it must be quick AND look good. This is why I settled with the simple conversion for the gun, by just snipping off the magazine, and making sure all guns have fixed bayonets. It was my first time using Nulm Oil, and I think I went overboard with that.

The pallete:

  • English Uniform - shirt & kilt
  • Brown Olive - helmet, armor, water bottle (this will also be used for flamers & vox)
  • Green Ochre - webbing, gas mask, ammo pouches (nothing green about green ochre, I discovered)
  • Chocolate Brown - boots, bayonet sheath
  • Beige Brown - rifle
  • Dark Flesh - wood grain on rifle
  • Gunmetal Grey/Leadbelcher - metal parts on rifle, bayonet, metal parts on gas mask, buttons, bits of barbed wire on base (I used Gunmetal Grey on the rifle, but switched to Leadbelcher for the bayonet and other stuff, which I find works better for 28mm models. I'll be using Leadbelcher moving forward)
  • Burnished Gold - aquila on chest, belt buckle, badge on kilt, winged skull on rifle
  • XV-88 - highlight for leather parts
  • Agrax Nightshade - shading for rifle
  • Nuln Oil - shading for everything else
  • The Fang - first layer drybrush on base
  • Fenrisian Grey - second layer drybrush on base
  • White Scar - final layer drybrush on base
  • Bestial Brown - base rim

Anyways, I'm happy with it so far, and your thoughts on this would be great. I do have 90 infantry to paint, so keeping it simple and quick is a priority. In the meantime, I'll start batch painting by squad the base English Uniform and Brown Olive colors, as those are pretty much confirmed.

Keep them dice rolling ...

  1. Wow that looks great dude! Wood furniture on the rifle, basing, scheme... all top notch. This army is going to look SWEET!

    1. Thanks. I'm excited about it too. I'm going to finish the first squad, then do a vehicle. Most likely a converted Wyvern. It would be awesome to see your Krieg fielded against the Denerair Highlnders in some trench warfare action!

  2. The rifle reminds me of the old SMLE, very fitting for the army theme. Everything looks really good and I like the way the gold really stands out.

    1. Thanks very much. That's exactly what I was going for for the rifle

    2. After a second look I've been thinking the head looks awkward. Looks like its leaning to far back, could just be the camera angle.

  3. Nice work mate.

How long did that take to do?

I look forward to seeing special weapons etc. Any preferred special weapons for these guys planned?

    1. Thanks. It took me about one and a half hours. But then again, I was messing about choosing shades and finishes, and redid a few areas I didn't like. I think it will take me an average of 30 minutes per infantryman when I start batch painting.

Assault infantry platoons prefer the holy flamer for their unparalleled efficiencies in cleansing heretics. Platoon command squads tend to prefer the grenade launcher, providing their platoons with some immediate mobile ranged fire support, often fielding up to 3 of these weapons per command squad. Anti-tank platoons are equipped with the trusty QF 13pdr lascannon.

    2. Haha thats exactly the answer I wanted to hear. Are you gonna attempt a tartan kilt on your commander?

I look forward to seeing a squad complete!

    3. Right now the plan is for the company commander to actually wear pants and riding boots, with a cane underarm. But definitely the standard bearer and bagpipe player will be wearing tartan. I'll be using Vic command squad sprue for that. I can't wait to see a squad done too!

    4. If I remember right the technical term for tartan trousers on officers is troons. Could be wrong though.

    5. I'll need to check on that. Thanks

    6. Just had a quick check and its Trews not Troons, almost right.

    7. Thanks very much. And that pic of Sir John Sinclair pretty much underlines the painting challenge :)

    8. Yeah, certainly does! Not a challange I fancy, not that I'm even capable of achieving it!

    9. The plan is to follow word for word some of the tutes I've seen online. And keeping it to just 2 guys helps a lot. I can't imagine painting the whole army ... I'd go blind!

  4. Very nice work! ^_^ Also thanks for letting us know the paints you used. It's always great to see how a particular colour scheme is realised.

    1. Thanks very much! As you can see, not much flesh to paint here :)

  5. My... God... He is *Sniff Sniff* beautiful! Well, now that that's out of me system, that bad ass right there is down right awesome man. And thanks to you, my entire plan to scrap my highlanders is being scrapped, and I am gonna finish my lads, maybe without the gas masks you did, but the rest will be pretty damn close.
I didn't think that I would much like a ww1 styled Scottish guardsmen, but seeing these has changed my mind. If you don't mind I am gonna steal your idea (but with a line infantry unit instead of mech) and then add my teriyaki death corps as vets or conscripts and call it good, Three thumbs up (Wait, I ain't a muta... *Gunshot)

  6. To tell you the truth I am still thinking about doing them with a tartan, but if I don't, I might do a more green scheme then you have done, Course If I do him in a tartan he is getting silver armor and a white or black shirt to match, that way he is shiny and overly ostentatious.

    1. The tartan with silver armor will look awesome. Of course, the green scheme would be simpler, but with the silver armor, and black or white shirt, it should look properly ostentatious :)

    2. I agree whole heartedly, the color of the shirt was gonna depend on the tartan, if the tartan is red black shirt, blue tartan gets a white shirt, and the entire platoon was gonna be a single color, showing they are all the same clan. In my opinion, the empire seems to lack ostentatious guardsmen, besides the praetorian guard and the mordian iron guard, which both me and good old Swastakowey agree on that I think
